Cell Phone Reception

If you watch the ads on television, you might think that in order to get good cell phone reception you have to have a certain cell phone carrier. While it is true that some carriers seem to get better reception than others, it has as much to do with the cell phones as it does the service provider.

Cell phones get their reception from cell phone towers, and cell phone towers are shared by the service providers. If they weren't there would be no place to walk or drive because there would be 73 cell phone towers on each block just so that all of the providers could offer service to all of their customers and potential customers. The thing is, though, that each cell phone tower is only allowed to let a specified number of people on the frequency at one time, this is according to FCC laws. So if your provider has more of the frequency of that tower than you might get better reception from it.

The phone itself needs to be designed to accept the reception from those towers from a distance. Most towers are built so that you can get a signal as you leave one tower and enter another. They only radiate signals so far. So you might be at the edge of a tower's signal and notice that your call is getting weak or you may actually get dropped calls. Perhaps all you needed to do was to walk about two or three more feet to be in the next tower's range and your phone might have worked. Perhaps your carrier has more frequency on the next tower than the last one.

So in order to get the best possible cell phone reception, you will need a good carrier as well as a good cell phone. It's not all about "the network". Most cell phone carriers sell their phones at shops and kiosks, as well as on the internet. You can certainly stop by and ask an employee of that carrier which phone gets the best reception. But what if you want to purchase your own phone and have it turned on by the service provider of your choice? How can you be guaranteed the best reception?

There really is no way to know if you are going to get good cell phone reception until you have tested the phone and the carrier. The best thing to remember if you want great cell phone reception is to check the return and cancellation policies for both the phone and the carrier just in case you aren't happy.
